Facts About Wireless Surround Sound Systems

Like it or not, audio interconnects are here to stay for awhile. There’s a number of factors for manufacturers including quality, security and price. However this doesn’t mean that wireless technology can’t give you a helping hand now for your wireless surround sound systems.

While wired technology probably still has an advantage over wireless, but the gap is closing quickly. Unless your a hardcore audiophile you’ll probably not be able to perceive any difference at all. So let’s take a look at the technology behind a wireless speaker system.

First understand that there really aren’t true wireless surround sound systems. Since you still have to amplify the audio signal you still need power so every system will require at least a connection to a power source. There are a few battery powered systems on the market but these are mainly for use with a multi-room audio system rather than a wireless surround sound system.

So the real benefit of wireless surround sound systems is not having to run speaker wire all around the room. Normally this would be used for your rear surround speakers or for that subwoofer you need to place away from your main system for optimum sound. Basically it provides you the ability to focus on the sound and not on the difficulties of installation.

One thing to keep in mind is that wireless systems typically operate either over a 900MHz or 2.4 GHz band. To ensure a good signal, most of the systems use a pretty robust RF transmitter. Since most wireless home networks also work in the 2.4GHz band you may in fact cause interference with your wireless home network. Keep this in mind as you design your wireless surround sound systems.

Many home-theater-in-a-box solutions today come with integrated wireless rear speaker solutions. You can also find add-on wireless surround sound systems available for your existing home theater. Add-on units consist of a small sending unit that connects to your A/V receiver. The signal is then transmitted to a powered audio receiver at the location of the remote speakers. You then connect the speakers and the rear audio receiver using standard speaker wire. Again, the benefit is not having to run speaker wire across the room to connect your rear speakers.

Keep in mind that you can use an add-on system for more than just connecting your rear speakers. They can also be used as a cheaper alternative to in-wall wiring and multi-room installations for whole house audio systems.

However you use it, installing wireless surround sound systems is usually a simple process. Generally you power up the wireless system, connect your audio source and your done. No doubt that as technology improves the quality of the systems will improve as well but the systems that are available today can already provide a clear solution to the problem of wiring across the floor and provide more than adequate sound quality for the typical home theater enthusiast. Take a look at what’s available and start enjoying wireless surround sound systems today!
